[It had taken her some time, a little heavy lifting and an awful lot of reading up on taking care of fish and sea life in the library, but it's finished. Room twelve in community building three now has a fully functioning fish tank! There's a hanging filter happily bubbling away into the water of the pretty bare looking tank. Fuuko had wanted to go down to the beach and find a few shells and what not but it's really cold, so for now the tank only has some gravel along the bottom and a rock or two in it.

As the journal comes into focus it's possible to notice something in the tank past the gravel and rocks. In fact if you can't notice it you must need your eyesight checked as Fuuko currently has the journal pushed right up against the glass of the tank.

The most adorable of adorable starfish is inside, laying on top of one of the rocks. Yes, a real live starfish. Fuuko couldn't believe it either. A real live starfish! It needs repeating, okay, it's a real a starfish. REAL. Many a trance came and went when she first unwrapped the jar containing the little guy.

Having kept the journal on for a minute or so in silence whilst she shows off her new pet, Fuuko speaks up.]

Fuuko cannot thank whoever gave Fuuko such a gift this Christmas time enough! Had Fuuko been able to find a tank and supplies sooner then rest assured, Fuuko would have thanked whoever-you-are long ago!

[Turning the journal towards her face which has a giant smile plastered all over it, because hey, guess what guys, it's a real starfish. And it's her pet! Aaah!]

Fuuko has even decided to keep the jar that-- Oh, Fuuko still needs to think of a name... But Fuuko is keeping the jar he came in as a memento of this wonderful present even in his nameless state! [Giving the journal a wave she starts closing the journal-- But wait, ooone more thing.] Fuuko almost forgot to mention the Starfish Festival seeing as all Fuuko can think of right now is this cute little guy. It'll probably be in April sometime, though there's no definite date yet. Just letting you all know!

Any Christmas where I'm still here with my friends and nobody's died is a good Christmas, let's put it that way. Do you have any idea who gave you the starfish?

So it was a good Christmas then. Fuuko is glad to hear it. [tapping the journal in thought.] If only Fuuko did! Fuuko wants nothing more but to thank whoever it was who found such a starfish for Fuuko.

It was a great Christmas. [She's peering into the journal there, trying to see the starfish a little better.] I'm sure whoever it is is listening and they appreciate your gratitude. You're having troubles naming him though?

Fuuko can only hope they are. Just to be on the safe side, Fuuko will thank them again next time too. [Moving around the tank and standing a little closer to the rock the starfish is currently resting on.] That's right, it's very hard thinking up a name which properly suits this starfish.

I bet...names are important. You don't want it to be something you regret because then the starfish's self-esteem will be lowered by the cheap name. Well...what are some of your favorite names? Did you have any other pets back home?

Precisely, the starfish's name must be something timeless that will always be remembered. Fuuko never had a pet back home so this is an entirely new experience. [Favourite names... Hm, never really thought about that.] Fuuko could name it Sanae-san! Nagisa-san would be honoured to have a starfish named after her mother. [Maybe.] There's always Manami-san too, but that's based on 'affection' and 'sea'. What do you think Shiki-san?

[...considering the fact that 'Sanae' in her mind equals Mr. H?] I think Manami would make a great name...you feel a lot of affection for the starfish, don't you?

'A great deal of affection' wouldn't even be close to summing up Fuuko's feelings for the starfish! Fuuko thought the name might be a little predictable, but if you think it's good then Fuuko will roll with it!

[Staring into the tank.] Fuuko will christen you Manami.

I think it's perfect. [And she's staring, too.] I think he likes it. [He doesn't seem to be protesting at any rate...is it possible for a starfish to project feelings in the first place? Oh the wonders of the seas.]

[Look at him sitting there completely motionless in the tank...] Yes, it's quite clear he enjoys his new name! Manami-san is truly the sort of name given only to the best of the starfish out there, it's a honour to have been given this name! [Still just sitting there, chillin'. Damn that is one cool starfish.]

[He is quite lovely, but Shiki now has a question.] Is he a mobile kind of animal, or is he stuck in his tank all day?

He can move around a little inside the tank, onto the rocks and the glass and even the gravel at the bottom! But he can't leave the tank for his own safety. [...] This isn't Fuuko being a doting parent, it really is best for him to stay there where the tank is adjusted just for him. [Salt water tanks are much harder to maintain than she had ever thought...]

That's what I thought...well. I guess the next best thing is to draw him a lot of pictures so he knows what's going on in the village. Starfish can see, right? [Shiki why are you encouraging this...]

Fuuko read that the starfish have 'eyespots' so they can see. [Draw stuff for the starfish? Excellent idea!] Fuuko should draw the entire village and then stick the pictures to the tank. Then Manami-san will be in his own little village inside the tank!

I think that's a good idea. He can see the changing seasons with the rest of us.

[Oh that sounds like a lot of work, making a new picture for each month.]

Hopefully Manami-san won't notice the seasons start to look the same after the first year.

[Totally going to reuse the same four pictures for the seasons!]

I'm sure he'll appreciate the effort nevertheless. You'll be a great starfish owner, Fuuko. I can tell.

Maybe Fuuko will get some more starfish later on too, and then they can all live happily together in Fuuko's tank. Each and every starfish will be loved and cherished equally by Fuuko!

[All this taking care of starfish and reading up on them is kind of thought provoking really.]

Maybe there's some sort of marine biologist that focuses only on the starfish. That would be a great job to have.

Can all of the starfish share a tank? Or are they like certain fish that'll eat each other? [Because...that could end badly.]

Even if there isn't, nothing says you can't be the first one.

Fuuko read once that 'if one fish can fit in the mouth of another fish then it'll end up there'. The same might apply to different starfish. Fuuko will need to look into keeping more than one starfish if it ever comes to that. [Then again starfish have tiny 'mouths' but eat stuff much bigger than them sometimes. Oh dear.]

That would be truly wonderful! The very first starfish marine biologist... Fuuko will need to work hard to reach a goal like that.

I'm sure the library has some books on it. It's all about looking.

It's a good goal. As long as you don't lose sight of that dream, you can totally achieve it...even in a place like this. [Especially in a place like this, actually.]

Fuuko will plan a thorough search for the next time Fuuko is at the library!

Actually... Would it be easier or harder to achieve your dreams here? Fuuko had only ever dreamt of a starfish festival yet it seems to be happening here. If Fuuko studies hard then becoming a marine biologist must be just as easy!

...it's easier if only because there's nothing to stop you. You have the support of people here, and you don't have distractions. But it's preparation for achieving the same dreams when we get home, isn't it?

[Back home? Right, right... There's quite the pause here before Fuuko replies.]

That's right, Fuuko will achieve the same thing when Fuuko returns home, so this is just good practice until then.
